Its large display area will give movie nuts something to drool about and the fact that it has a Freeview HD tuner should be well appreciated amongst those who are tired for paying for HD on subscription services.
Note: Model Numbers Explained
The model TX-L42E3B that features in this review is available at various retailers but may have different model numbers their store floor rooms or on their websites.
TX-L42E3B – Comet, Laskys, Amazon, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, Currys
TX-L42E3 – John Lewis
Like many entry level TVs the Panasonic TX-L42E3B is not at the cutting edge of style, but it is also far from being ugly.
A glossy black bezel and stand ensure that it is in keeping with what you would expect from a modern TV and its LED backlighting means that it cuts a fine figure when viewed from the side.
A grey fading stripe below the display adds a little flare to the front of the Panasonic TX-L42E3B and while it is a little bit anonymous overall it still captures attention.
Decent picture quality due to backlit LED TV technology
The 42 inch screen is unsurprisingly equipped with a 1920×1080 resolution, allowing you to squeeze on every pixel from a full HD Blu Ray movie or video game.
A rich colour pallet which is true to the lifelike hues it must represent is afforded thanks to the combination of a decent image processor and the back lit LED backlighting.
Contrast is also competently handled, so you need not worry too much about blacks looking overly grey or whites being less than the milky tone you would expect.
Some edge lit TVs are hindered because backlighting is uneven, resulting in a halo effect or patchy images, but this is not a problem with the Panasonic TX-L42E3B. It is in this way that the TV manages to push out of the realm of the average and into that of the exceptional.
SD slot for pics and motion images but lacks USB connection
Connectivity comes in the form of an SD memory card slot into which you can slip a compatible storage card to help you enjoy digital media transferred across from your PC or taken directly from your digital camera or camcorder.
As well as offering video playback from SD cards you can view pictures and listen to music.
Since this is a budget option there is no USB input and while an Ethernet port is present you cannot access the Viera Connect video streaming service that is available on other models.
However, for this price it is difficult to level a decent complaint.
Built-in Game Mode on the TX-L42E3
Like a plethora of modern TVs the Panasonic TX-L42E3B has a preset gaming mode designed to please those who play lots of online shooters and sports titles.
Its response time means that there is no discernable lag between pressing a button and having the action appear on screen, so if fast paced gaming is something you crave then the Panasonic TX-L42E3B can deliver it by the bucket load.
